Frasers

One of my favourite cafes in Mt Eden. Its been a while since I got to dine here. The cakes still amazes me.

My sister  (fivepointdusk) ordered our fav regular dish – chicken sandwich, and was met with disappointment, it was not up to standard today. My new favourite – Moroccan chicken wrap was delish. I love wraps. This one have to be one of the best I’ve tasted. The grilled smoky flavour of the chicken and vegetables were perfect. The dish was very filling. Half of the wrap and I was already quite full. But I couldn’t resist the blast of the flavours and had to devour the rest.

Desserts is a must at Frasers. If you don’t want to eat there, you can just pop in for a slice of cake or tart. I’ve tried numerous of their slices and tarts and I have to say my favourite is either Banoffe or
Lemon Meringue (Mmmmm- the best!!!!) Perfect lemon curd. if you remember from The Apothecary post I mentioned I love soury curds. This. Is. The. ONE.

Their signature is the New York Cheesecake, am not a fan of baked cheesecakes tho, I like mine fresh. Today we decided to try something new, the Plum White Chocolate Cheesecake. We had our doubts when ordering, but as usual, we were not disappointed. Mini white choc bites sticking out of the slice which melts in your mouth. Although I would love to have a stronger taste of the plum.

Note: I personally wouldn’t recommend the drinks, they aren’t top notch and are quite expensive. I would save those coins for a slice of cake instead.
There are tons of interesting/nicely furnished shops around the corners of Mt Eden!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADecided to give the well known Circus Circus Cafe a second try this week – and to my much disappointment it still isn’t my cup of tea. The decor of the cafe is amazing ,every detail matches the circus theme. I especially love their take away cups and coffee card design. However, the food ain’t up to scratch.
My mum and I decided on cabinet food this time and choose the Salmon Quiche and Chicken Roll. Salmon Quiche was edging towards the salty side. I couldn’t taste the freshness of the salmon. Whereas the Chicken Roll was a bit better. I love the toasted sesame on the bread. (Mmmm!)
One thing I did like about the meals were the relish. Instead of the normal ones you get, they put peaches into it, giving the relish a fruity taste which helped balance the saltiness of the dishes.

We decided to get a slice of cake (just because) and it was a regretful decision. Looking for something that weren’t too heavy and refreshing we choose the Orange Almond cake (gluten free) a bad mistake. The cake was mushy and was too sweet. It didn’t have the nice orange flavour. The yoghurt just made the cake more soggy. I guess its good to say I won’t be visiting again. But if you love having a afternoon off in a different setting, go and enjoy a cup of coffee and admire the decor.

until next time… TwoSipsAfter

White’s & Co

Quick snack at White’s & Co. Located in the heart of Britomart’s newly built train station. Their frozen yoghurt are by far the best I’ve tasted. Natural fruit flavours are strong accompanied by the creaminess of the yoghurt. The topping bar offers dozen choices from fresh fruits to nuts, sprinkles and sauces. Servings are very generous as well. (mind you, free sprinkles when you get a cone). In my opinon the chocolate flavour wasn’t that great. Berry was good tho. If you wanted to try two flavours at once should give the half half a go. Minor flaw tho, there are only a few tables hence if it gets busy you might have to take your scrumptious cup of yoghurt and sit outside of station.

(right next door to Tyler St.Garage, pop in after your dinner for some dessert)

Tyler St. Garage

It was a lot packed than I would’ve expected for a weekday. The garage interior is simple but gives the restaurant a extra touch to it.Many restaurants around Auckland have now opt for a high celling less decor – which I really love.

BIG Surprise- tuesday’s was half price pizza! a plus for my rather flat wallet. Be sure to check out the daily specials before you go if there was a particular dish you wish to try. I did notice on the menu it had edamame beans as starters (which is rather interesting for an european restaurant).

Me and my friend decided on Smoke salmon pizza, Pork belly sliders and shoe string fries to share.

The pizza had to be one of the best I’ve tasted. I love the sweet chili glaze on the base instead of the normal tomato sauce. The salmon chunks weren’t too overloaded. Combined with the mint leaves it didn’t make the pizza overly too heavy. But I must say the cheesey-ness won me over.  (Also note the creative design in leveling the pizza on top to enable more room on the table for other dishes.)

Pork belly sliders are basically ‘mini burgers’. We couldn’t get over the fact at how cute they were. The pork belly were pork shreds. They were too dry for my liking. The apple slaw was nicely tho. Thin slices of apple with sauce. We both agreed if there was more apple it would’ve been better. The bun was amazing tho.
Improvising we added the chili sauce to the burger. It helped give moisture and a hint of spiciness which was a great combo.  We ended up added the chili sauce to everything.

Shoe string fries was my least favourite of the night. Thought it was going to be thin crispy fries, yet they were thick. The potato aioli was too salty.

The cocktails looked delicious, served in madison glasses with overflowing fruits. A note to try it next time!
One thing to note is when entering there are no staff on wait so you’ll have to just walk in and catch their attention. However, the staff are very friendly.  I will be coming back soon for the pizza’s and drink

The Apothecary Cafe (antique shop cafe)

Hidden amidst the busy streets in Howick is a little gem. What sets Apothecary Café from others is its unique style of using antique furniture as décor. To kick-start my day I ordered a small latte alongside a lemon curd tart with the optional yoghurt on the side. I don’t know about you but I love my lemon curds to be on the more soury edge. This one was too sweet for me. It didn’t have the tangy lemon taste to it.However, eat it with the yoghurt and it matches perfectly.

The milk of the latte was disappointing. It didn’t have the creamy, skilly texture to it. The latte art was also a let down. However, as I began sipping away I noticed, the coffee roast had this distinctive finish to it; it had a nice roasted flavour and brought creaminess to the drink, making it easy to drink without the strong blast of caffeine.

I had tried the ginger slices before and they were superb, it was made with fresh ginger. Bottom of the slice was crisp and not overly heavy while the icing was just perfect with the right amount of ginger. I love ginger slices. Sadly, a lot of places tend to add too much sugar and butter. The almond croissants also seemed a big hit.

If you like to just relax, chill with a friend , family or yourself in a ‘different than your usual cafe’ then head over to Apothecary. You can spend a whole morning captivated by the antiques and decor around the cafe. Be sure to try the ginger slices.

“Where are you from?”
“A tiny dot on the map”

New Zealand may be tiny but there are many hidden gems in Auckland City that wouldn’t lose to world class standards.  A perfect cup of  steamed milk with a touch of latte art adds that little extra to the meal. As a cafe lover, the increasing standards of cafes around the city is exciting. I can’t wait to share my journey discovering those hidden, undiscovered longtime favourites scattered around the city to search for the most unforgettable sip.
